Sally - what happened next

Posted on 23 November 2008 by Freya North

Sally, for those of you who have read Chloe, married the delectable Richard Stonehill on the shores of Loch Lomond one summer. In true Sally style, she decided not to wear pants under her frock. She gave them to Chloe to hide in her rucksack.

The Stonehills had a belated honeymoon in Bali, as Richard was busy in his architecture practise working on a new restaurant project for Marco Pierre White.

Sally has been promoted at the Primary School, which is great for her bank account but means she has increased responsibilities and had to forego the annual trip to Paris. Jolly good thing too, I say, because she got up to all sorts of mischief and very nearly came a-cropper when she was last there.

Richard sold his bachelor pad in Notting Hill and Sally sold her tiny flat in Highgate. With property prices being utterly silly in London, they both made huge profits, which they ploughed into a very nice Victorian terrace house in Muswell Hill. It’s not highly convenient for Richard’s work but he bought a motorbike much to Sally’s protestations. She resolutely refuses to ride on the back of it, though secretly she’d quite like to as she’d like the excuse to buy a pair of leather trousers.

Sadly, Sally’s beloved Aunt Celia passed away but left the house on Mull to her precious niece. Sally and Richard will be spending the Millennium there with their friends Bob, Catherine and baby Victoria.

I just wanted to say that I have just finished reading Sally for the second time (I loved it so much last year when I read it)…..it was even better this time! I think its wonderful and the story stayed with me….I could picture things so clearly in my mind the gorgeous places (Mull) and I thought the very Englishness of it was a joy! Its a story I didnt want to end, could have carried on reading and I loved being a part of Sal and Richies world. I think its wonderful that Sal gave so much thought to things and never just jumped in….something we just dont seem to do today! Superb and very memorable. What talent. x

    Hey Tara
thanks so much for taking the time to contact me. I’m really chuffed that you’ve enjoyed “Sally” enough to read it twice in one year! I’m also very pleased that the book is still fresh and relevant all these years after it was first written. I started it in 1991 - when I’d decided to give up the PhD to pursue my dream of writing novels. It wasn’t published until 1996. Sally will always have a soft spot in my affections - which was why it was so nice for me to ‘catch up’ with her in both “Chloe” and then, seven years later, in “Love Rules”!

‘Chloe’ was the first Freya North book I read, years ago. It was the beginning of a mild obsession, (and an addiction to tiramasu after reading ‘Sally’). I stopped at ‘Fen’ and see I have 4 novels to catch up on. I love the characters, especially the hunky cyclists in ‘Cat’ and Maxanpolly. even after all these years, I remember bits that make me smile. the updates are a great touch, looking forward to ‘Pip’

Hi, I’ve just got onto your website (many sorries!) and just been looking through all the responses people have made about your books. I’d just like to say how much I have, and still do, enjoyed every one of your books. I love re-reading books and must admit that Sally is one of my favourite ones. I read it first when I was a student at university over 10 years ago, and still enjoy it now as a primary school teacher (yep, just like our Sally!). Your writing always makes me smile and I look forward to your next book! Thanks again

I read Sally after finishing Pillow Talk… I absolutely loved it and didn’t want it to end. It is almost like Sally and Richard were friends of mine! I have Chloe on my shelf which I want to start but don’t want my new favourite authors books to run out so I will try and pace myself. They are great reads and the only books that I have actually liked and have captured me from the beginning.
